9 april utses till Riot Grrrl Day

En hyllning till Kathleen Hanna.
Bostons borgmästare Marty Walsh utser 9 april till ’Riot Grrrl Day’ i ära för en av rörelsens grundare Kathleen Hanna, som figurerat som frontkvinna i bland annat Bikini Kill, Le Tigre och numera The Julie Ruin. Under sistnämnda bandets spelning i kväll kommer Bostons stadspolischef Joyce Linehan, som också är en vän sedan länge till Hanna, introducera henne och ge tillkännage henne äran. Borgmästare Walsh skriver:
”The riot grrrl philosophy has never felt more relevant, with misogyny still rampant in many cultural spaces… Riot grrrls redefine the language used against them and continue to fight the newest incarnations of patriarchy. In doing so, they ironically confirm one ex-congressman’s accidental wisdom: ‘the female body has ways to try to shut that down.’ It sure does: women’s voices telling their stories can shut that down.”
Hannas vän Linehan berättar även att Hanna brukade sova hemma hos henne under de tidigare åren, ”Kathleen’s agent called me to see if I would introduce Kathleen, probably based on the fact that Kathleen, back in the day, used to stay at my house when bands came through town. We knew each other from the indie rock world.” berättar hon för Boston Magazine.
